The screening of the film “Dr. Samsi” (Ratna Asmara, 1952) is an effort to bring forth a forgotten work after 70 years. The film “Dr. Samsi” itself is adapted from a script of the same title written by Andjar Asmara, which was performed in various parts of Asia in the 1930s. Ratna, as the director, transformed the script to present Dr. Samsi from a female perspective.

This 88-minute film is the first project of the Liarsip Class in preserving and digitizing films and researching the figure of Ratna Asmara. The research process of the Liarsip Class has been documented in the book “Ratna Asmara: Perempuan di Dua Sisi Kamera” (IVAA, 2022) and the documentary series “Merangkai Ratna Asmara” (2022). The screening and presentation of Dr. Samsi have been conducted in several cities, including Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in May 2022; Yogyakarta in November 2022; Poso and Palu in January 2023; Jakarta in March 2023; and Berlin, Germany, in June 2023.
